Utilitarianism model essay

The utilitarian ethical theory is very applicable in addressing this dilemma. The theory asserts that people should take actions that maximize total happiness. This means that organizations faced with this dilemma should take actions that enhance the well-being of most individuals that are affected by the issue.

One of the problems is that utilitarianism fails to meet the first criterion for a coherent moral theory. This criterion is the theory’s consistency with considered judgments. One of the statements of the utilitarianism theory is that everyone that an action affects should be affected equally.

With utilitarianism, an action is determined to be morally right or wrong if it brings about more pleasure or pain. The effect of the action is what a utilitarian looks at to determine if that action is the proper one.

If one chooses to implement a pre-determined set of rules (e.g. to avoid lying, to be pacifistic, to be modest,) which predominantly bring about the most ‘pleasure’/good for society, then focus can be diverted away from pursuing you mean personal happiness here happiness, and instead towards living a righteous life.
